Power Supplies will often have been given an IP rating, particularly in cases where the power supply is intended for use externally. These 'IP' or 'Ingress Protection' ratings denote how well a power supply protects itself from damage from external intrusion of solid objects and water.
An IP rating starts with the letters IP and is then followed by two numbers (and sometimes an optional letter). This is fully defined in standard IEC 60529. The purpose of IP rating is to provide the end user with a detailed description of a units capability rather than relying on vague terms such as 'waterproof' or 'suitable for outdoor use'.
The most common IP ratings for power supplies intended for outdoor use are IP65, IP67 and IP68. The first number, in these examples this being the number 6 denotes 'Protected from total dustr ingress'. The final number refers to what level of protection from liquid ingress is provided
IP65 = Protection from total dust ingress & Protection from low pressure water jets from any direction
IP67 = Protection from total dust ingress & Protection from immersion between 15cm and 1 metre in depth
IP68 = Protection from total dust ingress & Protection from long term immersion up to a specified pressure.
Now in its second year, the Electronics Design Show will provide exhibitors and visitors alike with
a unique opportunity to take part in an event aimed exclusively at electronic design engineers
when it opens on 22-23 October 2014 at the Jaguar Exhibition Hall, Ricoh Arena, Coventry.
The Electronics Design Show, which will once again be co-located with the Engineering Design Show,
plus the new Embedded Design Show, is expected to attract more than 4,000 visitors and 250
exhibitors in 2014. PowerPax will be exhibiting a wide selection of power supplies and power conversion products on stand H80. The Show will still remain true to the founding principle of catering specifically for
electronic design engineers, offering best practice learning and practical design ideas for visitors
through a focused exhibition, comprehensive conference and practical workshop sessions.
For 2014, a new section has also been added that will be devoted solely to the embedded market.
The Embedded Design Show will cater for the needs of engineers working in this demanding sector.
A workshop theatre located within the Embedded Design Show will host presentations that are
technical, application-based and look to provide attendees with a combination of solutions and
latest technical options. Details of the conference and workshop programmes will be announced
nearer the time.
Visitor numbers to last year’s inaugural Electronics Design Show exceeded the ambitious target set
by organiser Findlay Media. Attracted by more than 80 exhibitors, plus design oriented workshops
and high level conference sessions, more than 1,000 electronic design engineers and managers
passed through the doors at Coventry's Ricoh Centre during the Show's two days.
Findlay Media's executive director Ed Tranter said: “Electronic engineers in the UK have been looking
for a show which meets their particular needs. We are pleased that the Electronics Design Show has
done just that and look forward to this year's event, where we will launch the Embedded Design
